The people who deny wearing a mask or constantly wear it under their nose and hang it on their ear are actually not making a statement with such behaviour. Instead, they have realized that smelling their own breath for long minutes or hours is indeed enough to make them insecure’ – writes the journalist of Telex in the introduction of the article.
Our mouths are full of bacteria that naturally live there, and bacteria that enters the mouth with food. There are bacteria between our teeth, on the gum and tongue, basically everywhere in the oral cavity. As under the face mask we breathe through our mouth more frequently, it gets dry and the saliva production decreases. Among others, obviously saliva is needed to keep our mouth moist and clean by flushing out the unnecessary bacteria. Consequently, in a dry mouth there are more bacteria that can interact with sugar remains thus increasing the risk of tooth decay.
In addition, the worst thing about breathing through the mouth while wearing a face mask is that we exhale and then inhale the oral bacteria. Thus, our face mask becomes dirty and we can’t get rid of the unwanted troublemaker bacteria.
