A cyst or other lesion at the tip of the root most likely indicates that the nerves in the tooth are dead. As this condition can be completely painless for a while, you may not even notice the development of the process. Although, the condition may be indicated by discolouration of the tooth or sensitivity and pain experienced when biting.
A typical symptom of the condition is the appearance of a small swelling above the tooth, which usually indicates the formation of purulent discharge in the lesion at the tip of the tooth root. The pus makes its way into the mouth and it is emptied through the swelling.
The phenomenon does not cause pain because instead of accumulating, the pus is simply emptied, thus the sensory nerves are not stimulated. In the long run, however, this is very dangerous, as the bone around the lesion is constantly degenerating. As the inflammation spreads and the bone is degenerating, the chance of loosening the tooth is greater.
The treatment of this phenomenon definitely starts with root canal treatment. If the problem is not solved even with a precise root canal treatment, the tip of the root can be surgically removed to save the tooth.
In case of an inflamed root tip, rapid intervention is crucial. The spread of the lesion should be prevented, otherwise the tooth might be lost.
If you notice signs of swelling around your teeth, visit Saint Lucas SPA Dental for a free consultation to examine the cause of the phenomenon and, if necessary, surgically remove the inflamed root tip.
